Time for Three

New York,, NY
TIME FOR THREE

The groundbreaking, category-shattering trio Time for Three transcends traditional classification, with elements of classical, country western, gypsy and jazz idioms forming a blend all its own. The members -- Zachary (Zach) De Pue, violin; Nicolas (Nick) Kendall, violin; and Ranaan Meyer, double bass -- carry a passion for improvisation, composing and arranging, all prime elements of the ensemble's playing.

What started as a trio of musicians who played together for fun while students at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute for Music evolved into Time for Three, or Tf3 for short -- a charismatic ensemble with a reputation for limitless enthusiasm and no musical boundaries. Violinists Zachary De Pue and Nicolas Kendall first discovered their mutual love of fiddling in the country western and bluegrass styles. Bassist Ranaan Meyer then introduced them to his deep roots in jazz and improvisation. After considerable experimentation, the three officially formed Tf3. The ensemble gained instant attention in July 2003 during a lightning-induced power failure at Philadelphia's Mann Music Center. While technicians attempted to restore onstage lighting, Ranaan and Zach, who were both performing with The Philadelphia Orchestra, obliged with an impromptu jam session that included works as far afield from the originally scheduled symphony as "Jerusalem's Ridge," "Ragtime Annie," and "The Orange Blossom Special." The crowd went wild.

To date, the group has performed hundreds of engagements as diverse as its music: from featured guest soloists with The Philadelphia Orchestra to opening for k.d. lang.

Tf3 sets itself apart not only with its varied repertoire performed with astonishing technical acuity, but also through its approach. Its high-energy performances are free of conventional practices, drawing instead from the members' differing musical backgrounds. The trio also performs its own arrangements of traditional repertoire and Ranaan Meyer provides original compositions to complement the trio's offerings.

Tf3 has performed on many of the nation's impressive stages, including the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Joe's Pub in New York. They have performed their own original works with over 60 orchestras. The group recorded the soundtrack to the History Channel's production, The Spanish-American War, and in January, 2010, on the E1 Music (formerly Koch) label, will release its third CD, 3 Fervent Travelers. Their first recording, titled Time for Three, was released in October 2002, followed by a second CD released in January 2006, We just burned this for you! In addition, Time for Three has made a selection of its music available for digital download.

The ensemble has begun a major commissioning program to expand its unique repertoire for both symphony orchestras and concert series. One of these projects has involved a new work written by celebrated composer Jennifer Higdon, premiered in six performances by Tf3 with The Philadelphia Orchestra and Christoph Eschenbach in January 2008. Future commissions will include works by Chris Brubeck and William Bolcom.

Other highlights of Tf3's past seasons include the Beethoven Society in Washington, D.C.; Cerritos Center in Los Angeles; Joanne Woodward's Westport Playhouse; the Philadelphia Folk Festival; Wyoming's Grand Teton Music Festival; and Chicago's "Music in the Loft" series. The trio has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia under Christoph Eschenbach; the Cleveland Pops in Severance Hall and at the Blossom Festival; the San Francisco Symphony; at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit; in a two-week residency at the University of Michigan; a New Year's Eve concert with the Indianapolis Symphony; in Memphis with the IRIS Chamber Orchestra; in three cities in Florida with the Sunshine Pops; with the New World Symphony conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas; and with the Philly Pops and Peter Nero.

In addition to its demanding performance schedule, the trio is committed to reaching younger audiences and has participated in a number of educational residencies and outreach concerts including Paul Newman's Hole In The Wall Gang Camp (for which they have helped raise over $8 million along with Whoopi Goldberg, Alec Baldwin, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Joanne Woodward); The Fox Channel's "Good Morning Philadelphia" telecast from the Kimmel Center; the Liberty Awards Ceremony honoring Colin Powell; and the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce's morning debate banquet for gubernatorial candidates Edward Rendell and Mike Fisher. Tf3 was also featured in the Pennsylvania Society's televised annual gala from New York's Waldorf-Astoria.

Time for Three has been seen and heard frequently on various television and radio broadcasts throughout the country, including numerous times on Public Television and NPR, and was featured in a documentary film about Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square directed by Robert Downey, Sr.

The 2009-10 season finds Time for Three continuing a rigorous North American performance schedule, including appearances with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop; the Fort Worth Symphony under Miguel Harth-Bedoya; and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Also in 2009-10, the group furthers its commitment to outreach launching a multi-year residency with the Indianapolis Symphony and makes its Carnegie Hall debut on the Family Concert Series.

Stefan Milenkovich - "Violinist Stefan Milenkovich's recital at the Kennedy Center was so disarmingly magical that it is not easy to describe it's glories. Milenkovich is clearly at the threshold of a major career. This is not so much a matter of a dazzling virtuosity (though he has it all) as of searching musicianship." - The Washington Post

Stephen Beus - "Stephen Beus... intoned like a veteran, producing a totally professional sound and demonstrating sophistication beyond his years... Mr. Beus impressed with his evenhandedness, a uniformity of touch sans pedal that made a strong case for Bach on the modern Steinway. By keeping his declamations on an even keel, his lower notes exhibited more power as groundings without any need to make them louder than their upper cohorts. Some slight silences between phrases stressed the drama, while a strong enunciation fostered just the right feeling of gravitas... Expertly performed." New York Sun, 2008

David Requiro - Returning after a 2009 performance with our concert series, Winner of the 2008 Walter W. Their expanding presence on the music festival scene includes invitations to perform at the Ravinia Festival, the Stillwater Music Festival in Minnesota, and at the Caramoor Festival's Fall Gala with Yo-Yo Ma

Jan Vogler, Violoncello - Biography - Season 2009/10

Since he dedicated himself to his instrument he has constantly been working on expanding the spectrum of his cello sound and refines his musical language in an enduring dialogue with renowned contamporary composers and interpreters - with passion and the required dose of risk. The New York Times admires Jan Vogler's "lyrical intuition", the Gramophone Magazine praises his "spiralling virtuosity" and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung certified him the talent to be able to "let his cello speak like a singing voice". „From Screaming to singing - Jan Vogler and his cello" was the title of a 2004 Strad issue. In October 2006, Jan Vogler received the European Award for Culture. Vogler is artistic director of the Moritzburg Festival near Dresden and intendant of the Dresden Music Festival since October 2008. As a spokesman for culture he joined Germany's Federal President Horst Köhler on his state visit to Korea in February 2010.

In 2009/10, Jan Vogler will continue his prosperous collaborations with pianists Martin Stadtfeld and Hélène Grimaud in numerous recitals. After the world premiere of Udo Zimmermann's cello concerto Lieder von einer Insel with the Bavarian Radio Symphony in May 2009, Vogler will premiere two further works: With Armenian composer Tigran Mansurian's new cello concerto he will open the MusikTriennale Cologne in 2010 together with the Cologne Radio Symphony. In April 2010 him and the Boston Symphony will premiere a new work by US-American composer John Harbison. Jan Vogler will also appear with the Dresden Philharmonic, Cincinnati Symphony, Singapore Symphony, and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Jan Vogler, who currently lives in Dresden and New York together with his wife and two daughters started as principal cellist of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden only aged 20 but left the position in 1997 in order to fully concentrate on his already successful career as a soloist. Carreer highlights include his performances with the New York Philharmonic, one of them with Lorin Maazel during the reopening festivities of the Dresden Frauenkirche in 2005 when he premiered English composer Colin Matthews' Berceuse for Dresden. Jan Vogler plays the precious Montagnana ‘Ex-Hekking' cello from 1721.

Alongside the standard pieces Jan Vogler's orchestra repertoire includes exceptional works such as the cello concerto Dunkle Saiten by Jörg Widmann which is dedicated to Jan Vogler, and the cello concertos by Samuel Barber, Graf, Hasse, Bürger, and Michael Haydn.

Vogler began his successful collaboration with Sony Classical in 2003/04 with a recording of Strauss' Don Quixote and Romance with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and Fabio Luisi. Another Sony recording, titled The Secrets of Dvorák's cello concerto with the New York Philharmonic and David Robertson, was awarded the Diapason d'Or, among others. Following a CD with Fauré and Ravel piano quintets, in 2006 two new CDs were released with musicians of the Moritzburg Festival, performing Mozart chamber works, one of which was awarded the ECHO Klassik 2006. His highly successful recordings for Berlin Classics include the cello concertos by Samuel Barber and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. His encore CD My Tunes was released on Sony Classical in February 2007. The next CD from September 2007, Concerti Brillanti, includes cello concerti by Hasse, Graf, Michael Haydn (world premiere recordings), and C.P.E. Bach, recorded with the Munich Chamber Orchestra and Reinhard Goebel. His "Tango!"-CD with the Moritzburg Festival Ensemble has been released in Germany in July 2008. In April 2009, Sony published Vogler's recording of Shostakovitch (cello concerto No. 1 et. al.) and Jimi Hendrix works, recorded in New York together with the local chamber orchestra The Knights. Autumn 2009 saw the release of Bach sonatas with Martin Stadtfeld, January 2010 the second "Knights"-CD, on which Vogler can be heard in Dvorák's Waldesruh.

Imani Winds has established itself as more than a wind quintet. Since 1997, the Grammy nominated ensemble has taken a unique path, carving out a distinct presence in the classical music world with its dynamic playing, culturally poignant programming, genre-blurring collaborations, and inspirational outreach programs. With two member composers and a deep commitment to commissioning new work, the group is enriching the traditional wind quintet repertoire while meaningfully bridging European, American, African and Latin American traditions.

The Knights with Lara St. John

New York, NY
The Knights are a fellowship of young musicians of diverse and accomplished backgrounds who come together for the shared joy of musical exploration. The New Yorker says they are 'a little orchestra of some of New York's best strings-about-town.'

Lara St. John, violin - returns to the Naumburg Concerts after her well received and much enjoyed performance of Vivaldi and Piazzola's Four Seasons, on July 25th 2007, with the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Critics have recently written about Lara -"Canadian Lara St John really gave herself to the piece and produced as fine a performance, occasionally throwing caution to the wind, as I have ever heard. The slow movement was meltingly beautiful and the finale full of fireworks. The wind section must be mentioned here for it was magnificent throughout." - Seen & Heard International, November 2008

Lara St. John has been described as "something of a phenomenon" by The Strad and a "high-powered soloist" by The New York Times .

She has performed as soloist with the orchestras of Cleveland, Philadelphia, Minnesota, Seattle, Brooklyn, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, the Boston Pops and many more in North America. In Europe, she has played with the NDR Symphony (Hanover), Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Bournemouth Symphony and the Amsterdam Symphony, among others. In Asia, solo appearances have included the Hong Kong Symphony, Tokyo Symphony, China Philharmonic in Beijing, Guangzhou Symphony and the Shanghai Broadcasting Orchestra. Lara has also performed with the Queensland Orchestra in Australia.

The Los Angeles Times has written, "St. John brings to the stage personal charisma, an unflagging musical imagination and genuine passion." Recitals in major concert halls have included New York, Boston, San Francisco, Ravinia, Washington DC, Prague, Berlin, Toronto, Montreal and in the Forbidden City.

Lara's sixth recording, Hindson - Corigliano - Liszt/Kennedy/St. John was released in 2008 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, featuring two world premiere works; the Matthew Hindson Violin Concerto and the Martin Kennedy/ St. John arrangement of Totentanz by Franz Liszt, as well as The Red Violin Suite by John Corigliano. In writing of his impressions of the recording, John Corigliano commented: "I'm thrilled to be included in a new recording by the brilliant and always surprising Lara St. John. She is a real maverick, as a performer and in her choice of repertoire. An opulent and virtuosic new violin concerto and my Red Violin suite are coupled with a newly arranged version of a 19th century pianistic tour de force in her latest stunning release."

Lara's fifth recording, Bach: The Six Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo, described as "awe-inducing" by The Toronto Star, and "wild, idiosyncratic, and gripping" by The Los Angeles Times, was released in the autumn of 2007 where it climbed to No. 2 and was the year's best selling double album on iTunes.

Her third recording, Bach: the Concerto Album appeared in the "strongly recommended" section of Gramophone, which stated, "It is difficult to argue with such a technically dazzling and unfailingly musical interpretation." In June of 2005 the recording was released on iTunes where it immediately became No. 1 in the classical category. Lara has also recorded for Sony Classical.

Her debut CD, Bach: Works for Violin Solo, has sold over 50,000 copies and received resounding acclaim. The Chicago Tribune described Ms. St. John as having "superb technique and an irresistible vitality," while US News and World Report called the recording "an exquisite performance." Her second album, Gypsy, was described as "a sizzling display" by Gramophone, and The Strad called her "an electrifying player, as deeply satisfying in Bach as she is bewitchingly seductive in Waxman's Carmen Fantasy."

She has been featured in People, US News and World Report, on CNN's Showbiz Today, NPR's All Things Considered, Fox News, CBC and a Bravo! Special: Live At the Rehearsal Hall.

Highlights of the 2008-2009 concert season included Lara's London debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and her Wolf Trap recital debut with pianist Martin Kennedy.

Lara began playing the violin when she was 2 years old. She made her first appearance as soloist with orchestra at age 4, and her European debut with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon when she was 10. She toured Spain, France, Portugal and Hungary at ages 12 and 13, entered the Curtis Institute at 13, and spent her first summer at Marlboro three years later. Her teachers have included Felix Galimir, David Takeno, and Joey Corpus.s.

She performs on the 1779 "Salabue" Guadagnini thanks to an anonymous donor and Heinl & Co. of Toronto.

Scott St. John, violin/viola - "Mr. St. John played with endearing grace and rich tone. With either of his two instruments, violin and viola, he is a distinctive musician - strong, poised and musically intelligent." - The New York Times

Canadian-born Scott St John has captured the attention of the musical world through his riveting and virtuosic performances on the violin, viola and electric MIDI violin.

An outreach enthusiast, St John will devise workshop, masterclass and community activities with audiences of any age. St John's "Chamber Music Company" launched a new series of concerts including world premieres and varied collaborations in New York's Merkin Hall. Served as founder and former Artistic Director of Millenium.

Prizewinner of the 1992 Munich International Violin Competition; winner of the Young Concert Artists Award; First Prize winner of the Alexander Schneider Violin & Viola Competition in 1987.

Bringing a superb technique, and captivating musicianship to his performances here is an artist many want to invite back. Impressive debut performances with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra/Keith Lockhart and Toronto Symphony/Jukka-Pekka Saraste have both resulted in reinvitations.
Andrea Griminelli, flute - Acclaimed by critics and audiences for his sensitive interpretations and astonishing technique, The New York Times called Andrea Griminelli "one of the eight top emerging artists of the nineties".

He began playing the flute at the age of ten and studied with legendary flutists Jean-Pierre Rampal and Sir James Galway. Sir James has described him as "the greatest flute player who has come to the forefront of the musical scene for many years".

During his studies with Jean-Pierre Rampal at the Paris Conservatory he won music competitions in Stresa and Alessandria, Italy. In 1983 and 1984 he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Paris.

In 1984, at the age of 25 he was invited by Luciano Pavarotti to perform in Pavarotti's now famous concert in New York's Madison Square Garden. This was the beginning of a longstanding collaboration with the great tenor that led to unforgettable performance at London's Hyde Park in 1990, New York's Central Park in 1993, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Red Square, Moscow.

Throughout his career Griminelli has travelled extensively, performing tours in Europe, Japan, South America and United States. He has played most of the prestigious theatres and concert halls including La Scala and Carnegie Hall, together with artists such as Pretre, Giulini, Mehta, Norrington, Krivine, Bashmet, Luisada, Sutherland, Bonynge, Rampal, Rojdestvenski, Levine, Lu-Ja, Ughi, Sado and Semkov. He has worked with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, the Berlin Symphony, the Munchner Rundfunkorchester, the London Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Turin Rai Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

In 1991 Griminelli received a knighthood from the President of the Italian Republic and in 2003 was made Officer of Merit of the Italian Republic.

A champion of new work, he has given the world premieres of compositions for flute and orchestra by many composers including Carlo Boccadoro, Fabrizio Festa, Ennio Morricone and Shigeaki Saegusa.
His work on behalf of charitable causes has led to frequent collaborations with artists from popular culture including Elton John, James Taylor, Sting, Branford Marsalis and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull.

Andrea Griminelli has recorded extensively. His work includes flute concertos by Vivaldi and Mercadante on the Decca label with the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Rampal and the Rossini wind quartets (Decca). Decca has also released a disc entitled Andrea Griminelli's Cinema Italiano featuring sound tracks from the world of Italian cinema arranged by Bacalov and Morricone and interpreted by Sting, Luciano Pavarotti, Lucio Dalla, Deborah Harry and Filippa Giordano.
During the 2005 - 2006 concert season, Griminelli was very active in creating new recordings with Decca. Work from this time includes Mozart's complete concerti for flute with the Camerata Salzburg conducted by Sir Roger Norrington, a selection of early 19th century Italian music together with guitarist Filomena Moretti and music for flute and piano by Beethoven and Schubert with pianist Gianluca Cascioli.

Highlights of 2006, included a Decca release of the Mozart quartets for flute and strings with the Keller Quartet, tours of Latin America with Italian guitarist, Emanuele Segre and performances in Caracas with the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.

In September 2007 he was appointed President of the Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali "A. Peri" of Reggio Emilia, Italy and in January 2008 President of the Istituto Musicale "C. Merulo" of Castelnovo ne' Monti (R.E.), Italy.
In 2008 Griminelli appeared with the Orchestre Symphonique du Nancy; with the harpist Luisa Prandina; at the Hanoi Opera Hause in the Hennessy Concert Series; with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Savona; in a Pavarotti Tribute concert in Petra broadcast by Retequattro and in an Andrea Bocelli Concert in the Plebiscito Square, Naples. He also recorded Boccherini Quintetts with the Quartetto di Cremona for Decca.

Next concert season includes tours of Latin America, the United States, recitals with the Virtuosi Italiani, performances in Japan with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and a world tour with Andrea Bocelli. In recital, he will appear with Emanuele Segre in Europe, with the Quartetto di Cremona and as soloist with a number of European orchestras. (October 2008)

New York, NY
Maxim Eshkenazy, conductor
Considered a rising star among today's youngest generation of conductors, Bulgarian native Maxim Eshkenazy has been described as a musician of "vigor and intelligence..." who conducts with "complete assuredness and insight..." The Los Angeles Times calls him "charismatic and exciting."

Maxim Eshkenazy has just been appointed assistant conductor of the Pacific Symphony affective July 2008. His current conducting appointments include Music Director of the Bakersfield Youth Orchestra and Assistant Conductor at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. Previously he was associated with the Pasadena Youth Symphony as its Music Director, and served as Music Director of the Music of Changes Chamber Orchestra, Assistant Conductor of the American Youth Symphony, and Assistant Conductor of the Herbert Zipper Chamber Orchestra.

He regularly guest conducts Bulgaria's major orchestras, including the Sofia Philharmonic, Classic FM Orchestra, Pleven Opera-Philharmonic Association, Bourgas Opera-Philharmonic Association. Committed to the promotion of new music, Eshkenazy is frequently involved in performing the music of contemporary composers.

During the 2007/08 season, Eshkenazy shares the concert stage with noted violinist Shlomo Mintz in celebration of the State of Israel Independence Day. He also makes his conducting debut with the Varna Opera-Philharmonic Society Orchestra and returns to the Bourgas Opera-Philharmonic Society and Classic FM Orchestra.

Among last season's highlights was a concert with violin virtuoso Pinchas Zukerman and the Classic FM Orchestra, which received nation-wide attention and was broadcast on Bulgarian National Television.

Maxim Eshkenazy received his early musical training at the Sofia Conservatory before moving to the United States to pursue a double Master of Music degree in Conducting and Violin Performance at the University of Southern California.

He is an alumnus of several world-class conducting schools and workshops including the Pierre Monteux School in Maine, and was awarded a coveted Conductor's Fellowship to the newly established American Academy of Conducting at the Aspen Music Festival in the summer of 2000.

An avid sportsman and licensed pilot, Eshkenazy makes his home in Southern California.

Ashu, saxophone soloist
Concert saxophonist Ashu, age 26, has continually defied conventions winning major international and national competitions traditionally won by pianists and violinists. He made his recital debut at Carnegie Hall's, Weill Recital Hall. in New York and, at age 16, made his concerto debut at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. Since then, performances have taken him throughout the USA and Europe, including such locations as Norway, Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, Portugal, and the French West Indies.

With a dynamic style that captivates audiences, and a repertoire ranging from original soprano and alto saxophone works by Debussy, Ibert, and Villa-Lobos to his own arrangements of Morricone, Rachmaninoff, and Piazzolla, Ashu has shown that the concert saxophone can reach beyond stylistic categorization and to a large diversity of people. His playing has been described as "Riveting...Brilliant...Pizzazz to burn!" (National Public Radio Performance Today host) and "...just as much fun to watch him as it is to listen to him." (Dallas Morning News).

Born and raised in California, Ashu began playing the saxophone at age 10. His love for performing quickly became apparent and he began entering various competitions. Ashu has won First Prizes at the International Heida Hermanns Competition, International Kingsville Wind Instrumentalist Competition, National Federation of Music Clubs Competition, National Midland-Odessa Competition, National Lennox/RSO Competition, National George S. Howard Competition, and National Alliance for Excellence Competition. In addition, he has been overall winner of the Houston Symphony, Keweenaw Symphony, Skokie Valley Symphony, and Northwestern University Concerto Competitions. Others awards include overall winner of the American Opera Society Competition, First Prize winner of the WAFA Concerto Competition, winner of the Interlochen Governor's Scholarship, and Grand Prize winner of the Houston Symphony Flores-Smith Competition.

Ashu has toured as concerto soloist with symphony orchestras throughout the world (Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon, etc.) and has been presented on numerous prestigious recital series, with recent venues including the Vienna Konzerthaus, Kravis Center, and La Jolla Music Society Series. Upcoming engagements include concert tours and performances at music festivals throughout Europe, New Zealand, Australia, the Baltic, and the USA. Ashu received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in saxophone performance from Northwestern University and is currently based in the Chicago area. For more information on Ashu, please visit his website at www.ashuonline.com.

Program Notes
By Ashu

Jacques Ibert (1890-1962)
Jacques Ibert was born in Paris and attended the Paris Conservatory. His career was interrupted due to a brief service in the war, but after being demobilized, he wrote one of his most successful works, Escales (Ports of Call) for orchestra. Importantly, Ibert began studying the dramatic arts before turning to music. He believed that music was closely linked to the other arts, and it was simply part of a larger emotional response to all aspects of experience. He considered music to be the "expression of an interior adventure," and never mere pattern-making. He employed the moods and techniques of Impressionism along with the structure of neo-Classicism. Ibert also wrote incidental music for radio and films, including music for Orson Welles' film Macbeth (1948), and the circus scene for Gene Kelly's Invitation to the Dance (1952). In 1935, Ibert composed his Concertino Da Camera for alto saxophone, which is often considered one of the greatest works in the saxophone repertoire.

Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992)
Astor Piazzolla is the single most important figure in the history of the tango. He took an earthy, sensual, often disgraceful folk music and elevated it into a sophisticated form of art music. Piazzolla was also a virtuosic performer with unparalleled mastery of the bandoneon (a large button accordion). Born in Mar del Plate to Italian parents and raised in New York, his blend of styles reflects his many cultural influences growing up. He began his career playing the bandoneon on the radio in New York and later in the cabarets of Buenos Aires. Becoming bored with traditional tango, he went to Paris in 1954 to study classical composition with Nadia Boulanger who urged him to use his Argentinean roots in finding his own voice. He returned to Buenos Aires and began performing his newly dubbed "nuevo tango" style with his own ensembles - reworking the traditional tango rhythms and forms, infusing them with often harsh dissonances as well as classical and jazz elements, and eliminating the dancers and vocalists typically part of the tango. While his music earned him ruthless criticism from the tango purists of Argentina for his abandonment of tradition, his new style found an enthusiastic audience amongst young Argentines, a craze which quickly spread through his recordings and concerts during the 70' and 80's, bringing him enormous international acclaim throughout Europe and Latin America, and eventually the rest of the world.

Jules Demersseman (1833-1866)
Jules Demersseman was a very well know French composer during his time, though he lived a short life. He was born in the Netherlands and attended the Paris Conservatory at the age of just 11, receiving his "Premier Prix" at the mere age of 12. He was known as a flute virtuoso and composed in a style that demanded extreme virtuosity from the performer. He often used operatic arias as themes for his compositions.

New York, NY
About the composers:

Grammy, Tony, and Oscar award winner Don Sebesky is best known as house arranger for many of producer Creed Taylor's Verve, A&M, and CTI productions; the man whose orchestral backgrounds helped make artists like Wes Montgomery, Paul Desmond, Freddie Hubbard, and George Benson acceptable to audiences outside of jazz. He has taken critical heat for this, but Sebesky's arrangements have usually been among the classiest in his field, reflecting a solid knowledge of the orchestra, drawing variously from big band jazz, rock, ethnic music, classical music of all eras, and even the avant-garde for ideas. He once cited Bartok as his favorite composer, but one also hears lots of Stravinsky in his work. Sebesky started out professionally as a trombonist while still at the Manhattan School of Music, working with Kai Winding, Claude Thornhill, the Tommy Dorsey Band led by Warren Covington, Maynard Ferguson, and Stan Kenton. In 1960, he gave up the trombone to concentrate upon arranging and conducting, eventually receiving the breakthrough assignment of Wes Montgomery's Bumpin' album (1965). Some of the most attractive examples of his work for jazz headliners include Bumpin', Benson's The Shape of Things to Come, Desmond's From the Hot Afternoon, and Hubbard's First Light. He began to step out into the spotlight with the release of his all-star Giant Box, which was followed by sporadic further releases on CTI and GNP/Crescendo. He has also written classical works and a book, The Contemporary Arranger (Port Washington, NY, 1975).

Jaco Pastorius Three-time Grammy award winner Jaco Pastorius is the only electric bass player to be honored by Downbeat Magazine's Jazz Hall of Fame. With three Grammy Awards to his credit, brilliant fleet technique and fertile melodic imagination, Pastorius made his fretless electric bass leap out from the depths of the rhythm section into the front line with solo fluidity that demanded attention. He also posed a further triple-threat as a talented composer, arranger and producer. He and Stanley Clarke were the towering influences on their instrument in the 1970s. Born in Pennsylvania, Pastorius grew up in Fort Lauderdale, where he played with visiting R&B and pop acts while still a teenager and built a reputation as a local legend. Everything started to come together for him quickly once he started playing with another rookie fusionmeister, Pat Metheny, around 1974. By 1976, he had been invited to join Weather Report, where he remained until 1981, gradually becoming a third lead voice along with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter. Outside Weather Report, he found himself in constant demand as a sessionman and producer, playing on Joni Mitchell, Blood Sweat and Tears, Paul Bley, Bireli Lagrene and Ira Sullivan albums -- and his first eponymous solo album for Epic in 1976 was hailed as a tour de force. From 1980 to 1984, he toured and recorded with his own band, the innovative Word of Mouth that fluctuated in size from a large combo to a big band.

Benny Golson A rarity among contemporary jazzmen, Benny Golson is as accomplished a composer as he is a saxophonist. He was born in Philadelphia in 1929, and began his musical training on the piano before picking up the sax in his early teens. He learned to write music in a rather painstaking fashion, methodically transcribing the tunes off his favorite records into musical notation. Around the same time, Golson began serving his jazz apprenticeship, playing in jam sessions on Philadelphia's Columbus Ave. with fellow up-and-comers such as John Coltrane, Jimmy Heath, Philly Joe Jones, and others.

After graduating from Howard University in 1950, Golson joined the first of a number of Rhythm 'n Blues groups, this one led by Benjamin Clarence "Bull Moose" Jackson. He got his first big break as a composer in January 1955, when James Moody recorded a song of his called "Blue Walk." Toward the end of the year, he got an even bigger break when Miles Davis recorded " Stablemates," a song Golson began to write during an intermission of a show, ] when he stayed on the bandstand after spotting someone in the audience whom he wished to avoid. As musical director of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Golson spearheaded perhaps the most important period of that storied group's 46-year history. The Messengers' classic 1958 album Moanin' featured several Golson tunes, including "Blues March." Beginning in the mid-1960s Golson shifted his attention away from the jazz world per se, and began writing for movies and television. The themes of several popular television shows, such as M*A*S*H, Mission Impossible, Room 222, The Partridge Family, Mannix, It Takes A Thief, and Where It's At (David Janssen), are marked with his smooth, melodious signature. Benny has also been called upon to create arrangements for many superstar musicians, including Ella Fitzgerald, Lou Rawls, Diana Ross, Mel Torme, Dizzy Gillespie, David Sanborn, Max Roach, and many more. While growing into the role of a jazz legend, Golson has undertaken a variety of ambitious projects in recent years.

He was commissioned by the Lila Wallace Foundation to write a symphony which premiered at New York's Lincoln Center in 1993. In 1994 he wrote a piece for violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman which also premiered at Lincoln Center. During a two-year stint as a scholar-in-residence at William Patterson College he lectured to students about music and sociology. He received an honorary doctorate and gave the commencement address to 1,500 graduates. A Guggenheim Fellowship awarded in 1993 enabled him to begin work on his second symphony. In 1995, together with J.J. Johnson and Tommy Flanagan, Golson was given the Jazz Masters award by the National Endowment of the Arts. At the moment, he is finalizing a major college textbook which will be published in 1998. All of these honors and projects notwithstanding, Golson seems in recent years to have renewed his zest for playing. Since 1995 he has been a member and musical director of the all-star saxophone repertory band, Roots, which toured extensively in Europe and has recorded four albums. In 1996, Golson entered into a long-term relationship with New York's Arkadia Jazz. The first album for his new label is Up Jumped Benny, a live recording done in Switzerland with Kevin Hays on piano, Dwayne Burno on bass, and Carl Allen on drums. Next up is a collaboration with Harold Ashby, James Carter and Branford Marsalis, an album called Tenor Legacy a tribute to some of the great jazz tenor saxophone players. Also due from Arkadia Jazz is 40 Years of Benny Golson, an album featuring Benny, Art Farmer, and Curtis Fuller, plus pianist Geoff Keezer, bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Joe Farnsworth. It will be released together with a video concert and a video documentary chronicling his stellar career

After graduating from The University of Miami, Denis DiBlasio joined the big band of legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, serving as Maynard's Musical Director for five years. During this time he honed his virtuosity on the baritone saxophone and flute as well as a prodigious scat-vocal technique, and developed estimable composing / arranging skills. His scores have been published by Kendor, William Allen, Kjos, Doug Beach, Hal Leonard. Houston, Jamey Aebersold and Roncorp Publications. He is currently Director of the Jazz Program at Rowan University, conducts Rowan's Lab Band and holds the seat as the Executive Director of The Maynard Ferguson Institute of Jazz Studies at Rowan.

New York, NY
Sandra Rivera is an artist-in-residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Ms. Rivera has been imaginatively exploring the mystical qualities of flamenco for many years. She was an original member and principal dancer of Ballet Hispanico. She has presented numerous solo dance concerts including "Flamenco Mystico", "En Espiritu: St. Teresa de Avila", and an autobiographical work, "Barrio Girl: A Life Through Dance""at the Cathedral, and venues across the United States. This is her second appearance with the Naumburg Concerts.

Arturo Martinez (guitarist and musical director) was born and raised in Chicago where he started playing electric guitar at age 13. His interest in African-American musical traditions eventually led him to encounter the ethnic musical traditions of Spain. He has accompanied dancers Pilar Rioja, Chuni Amaya and Joaquin Fajardo. Mr. Martinez produces flamenco shows throughout the New York area and is currently working on an evening long piece that traces the diverse musical traditions that have influenced flamenco.

Domingo Alvarado (cantaor) was born in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, a city known for producing some of the greatest interpreters of flamenco singing. As a young boy, Mr. Alvarado won many competitions in saeta - a type of sacred flamenco song that is very profound and difficult to execute. After moving to Madrid he was hired by the renowned dancer, Soledad Miralles, and later toured with the legendary Carmen Amaya. That tour opened to critical acclaim at Carnegie Hall and marked the beginning of a four year contract with Ms. Amaya's company. During this period, Mr. Alvarez collaborated with Ms. Amaya and the late, great virtuoso flamenco guitarist, Sabicas, on the historic recording "Queen of the Gypsies" in addition to making other records with Sabicas.

After settling in New York, he toured the U.S. with the famous dancer Vincente Escuerdo. Other notable performances include The Maria Benitez Dance Company and the Dallas Opera Production of "La Vida Breve". Domingo Alvarado has recorded with Philips, RCA, Paramount, and Columbia records. His most recent recording is "Espiritu Flamenco". He sings regularly at the NYC restaurant, San Martin's.
